Carnation

Carnation

There are few flowers as quietly powerful as the Carnation. Often underestimated, this bloom surprises many with its ruffled petals, long-lasting beauty, and incredible versatility. From weddings to everyday arrangements, carnations remain one of the most reliable and expressive flowers in floral design.

Carnations come in two different forms: The regular carnation is usually around 2.5 to 3.5cm width. The mini carnations comes in a spray that has around 4-5 blooms in one stem. It’s about 1.5 to 2cm width when it’s fully opened.

Whether you are a floral designer or a flower lover, carnations deserve a fresh look beyond their traditional reputation.

Symbolism

Love, fascination, and distinction. Because of their meaning and durability, carnations are often used in celebrations, memorials, and heartfelt gifts.

Colours

Carnations come in a wide and vibrant range, including: Soft white and ivory, Blush and light pink, Bright red and deep burgundy, Yellow, peach, orange, Lavender and purple, Bi-colour and ruffled edge varieties

Their naturally frilled petals add texture and volume to any arrangement.

Vase Life

One of the most practical blooms in floristry – Average vase life: 7–14 days. With proper care: up to 2–3 weeks. Carnations are known for their exceptional longevity.

Storage Temperature

Keep them fresh and long-lasting by storing them cool. Ideal storage: 1–4°C (34–40°F) Cool temperatures help maintain firmness and prevent premature opening.

Caring & Conditioning

Not all Carnations have a hardy stem, some are very thin, so, proper handling ensures the best performance:

  • Remove any lower leaves to keep water clean
  • They prefer clean, shallow water with floral food
  • Avoid overcrowding to prevent bruising and mold buildup

Conditioning Steps

  1. Cut stems at a 45° angle using clean tools
  2. Dip into a QuickDip for 2 seconds
  3. Place immediately into fresh, cool water with floral food
  4. Allow them to hydrate fully before arranging
  5. Change water every 2–3 days for best results

Pro Tips

  • Carnations may appear closed at first, but they continue to open beautifully over time
  • They respond well to hydration and can last significantly longer than many focal blooms
  • Use in mass for texture, or as supporting blooms in bouquets for structure and longevity

Purchasing Tips

When selecting carnations, look for:

  • Firm, tight buds that are just starting to open
  • Strong, upright stems
  • Even colour with no browning edges
  • Petals that are not fully reflexed (over-opened)

Avoid fully open blooms if you need longer design life or transport durability.

Final Thoughts

Carnations are often overlooked, but they are one of the most dependable and expressive flowers in floral design. Their ruffled texture, wide colour range, and exceptional vase life make them a true workhorse in any florist’s toolkit.

Simple, elegant, and enduring, carnations prove that beauty does not always have to be fragile.

Happy arranging!
