There are few flowers as captivating as the Ranunculus. With their rose-like, tissue-thin petals and incredible array of colors, they look almost too perfect to be real. Whether you are a fellow floral designer or a flower enthusiast, these blooms are a must-have for any spring-inspired arrangement.
Common Names: While we call them Ranunculus in the design world, this beautiful bloom goes by several other names, including Buttercup, Persian Buttercup, Butter Cress, Crowfoot, Figwort, and Spearwort. The genus name actually comes from the Latin word for “little frog,” likely because many species naturally thrive in the same cool, moist habitats where you might find frogs.
Symbolism: Beyond their visual appeal, Ranunculus symbolize charm and attractiveness. Because of this, they have become a staple for weddings and romantic gestures. Different colors can carry nuanced meanings; for example, red Ranunculus are often associated with passion and romance.
Colors: You can find them in nearly every color of the rainbow, ranging from delicate creams, blushes, and soft pastels to bold, vibrant hues like orange, pink, cream, red, burgundy, and purple.
Vase Life: Average 3 to 7 days. With proper care, Ranunculus can have an outstanding vase life of 10 to 12 days.
Storage Temperature: Keep them cool! The ideal storage temperature is 34–40°F (1–4°C).
Caring & Conditioning:
- Hollow, fuzzy, and somewhat curvy stems. While this adds to their whimsical, cottage-garden aesthetic, it also means they can be top-heavy.
- The stems can snap easily if handled roughly.
- Wiring: If a bloom is particularly heavy, don’t be afraid to use stem wiring to provide extra support for the head. Use Floral Wire #18 or #20, bottom up, but handle it with care.
- Spacing: These flowers need room to “breathe” and open up. Ensure your vase or vessel has enough space so the blooms aren’t packed too tightly together, which can lead to bruising.
- Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle using clean tools.
- Dip the stem into the “Quick Dip” solution for 2 seconds – this will help the flowers drink much better and stay longer.
- Place them in fresh, cold water with floral food. Don’t give too much water as the stems can easily got rot. One to two inches of water will be good.
- Pro-tip: Keep them wrapped in paper while they have their first drink; this helps the stems stay straight and prevents them from curving too much.
Purchasing Tips: When buying, look for blooms that are just beginning to show color and feel “squishy” like a marshmallow. Avoid stems that are already fully open if you need them to last for a future event, as they will be more fragile to transport.
Whether you are creating a simple home centerpiece or an elaborate bridal bouquet, the Ranunculus brings a level of sophistication and romance that is hard to match. Happy arranging!
